Repair or Create New Panel?

I was presented with 2 stained glass panels that had multiple broken glass sections and the came was bowing and coming apart.  I discussed with the client what it would cost to repair the panels vs what the cost was to start over and use a couple of pieces of glass that were not broken.  The new panels will be stable and will not bow as the old ones have and they can have piece of mind that they will not fall apart on them.  

The bottom two images show the process of creating new panels. I am also using a restoration clear glass which has a slight wave in the glass which will match the original glass that is throughout this turn of the century house.

Glass Repair for Kitchen Cabinet

I received a call about a broken piece of glass in a kitchen cabinet and it was such that I could do the repair.  I don't talk about repair much so I thought I would share this.  I may post other repair work in the future. A corner piece was cracked so I took out the broken pieces as shown in the upper right of the top picture.  The panel was pieced together using copper foil and soldered together.  I had to remove the copper foil of the good sections of glass that joins the replacement glass and re-foil them.  I foiled the new piece and then soldered both front and back.  After completing the repair I remounted it into the cabinet frame.

After removing the broken pieces, I insert the good pieces I had cut earlier. I soldered the joints and re puttied the sections that I replaced.  I then insert the repaired section back into the panel, solder the joints and use a patina to darken the solder joints. The last thing is to clean the whole panel.

The following images show the process of removing the broken glass as well as separating the came to get to the broken pieces. The last image shows the process of cleaning out the came before being able to insert the new glass pieces.

Broken Glass?

I have had several calls about broken stained glass and thought I would share one in process.
This is a tall panel in which 3 pieces of glass were broken. The second picture shows the broken pieces and the first shows how I have taken the section out of the main panel so it can be repaired.  I still have to take apart additional sections to get to the broken pieces.  The trick is to not break other pieces in the process.  While the section is still together I went ahead and cut out good pieces.  I did this since it is easier at this point while the shapes are still together.

Stained Glass Repair- last steps

 Replace the outer u channel bar and solder the joints both front and back. 

Fill in the putty/cement both front and back and I like to use a whiting to help the putty/cement to dry faster and to clean up oils (from solder flux and putty) off of the glass. 

Once the putty/cement dry in a couple of days then clean the panel.

Stained glass repair, cont.

After removing the outer bar, the old putty/cement needs to be cleaned off the glass pieces.  In order to get the glass that is cracked out I had to remove the adjoining good piece of glass.  The lower picture shows the putty/cement being cleaned out of the lead channels. 

Re-cut the shape needed to replace the broken piece.

Put in the new piece and reinsert the other glass that was removed.
