Artist Studio Tour

Last weekend (Nov12,13) I was part of the Clark County Artist Studio Tour. 50 artists had been selected to open their studios and sell/show their work.   I had a great time meeting new people and discussing the art.
130 guests walked through my studio!  I wish I had taken pics when it was full but I was busy talking with them.

Glass for Designs 3 and 4 completed!

Here are the completed panels for designs 3 and 4.

I really enjoy the way the bevels turned out in the above triangles.  It has a lot more depth and movement changing the width of the bevel.

Designs 3 and 4

These are the last 2 designs of the hanging pieces I am making.  The triangles in the bottom one are beveled glass with colored glass beveled and bonded in the middle.

Design 2 completed!

This is a fun design, hand beveled pieces play with the light.  I did not bevel all around the shape of the glass which really adds interest and depth.  There is a zinc border which is cropped off for the pic.

Design 1 completed!

Design one is completed,  using clear textured glass in the main design and a milky glass for the background, the orange/red streaky glass is beveled to add light play and depth.  Zinc came surrounds the piece which is not pictured and a chain on top to hang it up.

New Glass Design, 2 of 4

This is the second design I am working on for smaller stained glass window hanging pieces.  I will be showing pics of the glass panels as I complete them.

I drew in where I will be beveling the glass.  I am excited about this design and really like the depth and movement that the beveling will create.

Before/After beveling colored glass

The top pic shows the shapes cut and not beveled.  Below pic shows the same shapes beveled.  The colors that are in the different layers of the glass show through with the bevel.  The bevel also changes the light so the glass shimmers more.  Once these are assembled there is more depth to the overall design as will be shown once the panel is completed.

New Glass Design, 1 of 3

I am working on creating 3 to 4 small glass panels to hang in windows.  This is the first design and will begin choosing colors and glass textures.
Several of the pieces will be hand beveled to add light play and depth.  I really enjoy the feel of this design.

What to say when applying for artist grants and shows

Over the last several years I have been applying to several artist grants and have not received anything to date.  The last two I asked for feedback and found out what I can work on for the next ones that I apply for.

Yes, images are very important, but the written portions of what you say are even more so it seems.
Here is what was said about my last one:

"The panelists did enjoy your work.  They appreciated your examples of contemporary stained glass, in particular the curvilinear Flight panels.  In skimming through your application, I think an area for potential improvement is your statement of need and your artist statement. In your statement of need you clearly articulate what you need these funds for, which is really important and great.  Adding in a component that really demonstrates why this award is important to your practice, and what receiving this award would mean to you could really strengthen your application, as this was a point of focus within panel deliberation, would be a good way to build on this.  I really appreciated the discussion of where you find inspiration for your work, and the joy your work brings, and I think deepening this description and really going into the why of how you find inspiration, or why you love creating in glass would be a way to further the impact of your current clear descriptions and really bring your message home to the reader."

I had written what was asked of me, but going further with it seems to be very important.  So, those of you who are applying for grants and shows, make sure your written portions are very thorough.

Xanadu Gallery features my work!

A few days ago Xanadu Gallery featured me on their facebook page and had some great things to say about my work and artist bio.  I am grateful to them and am glad to be a part of their online site.  They show contemporary work and have some great artists showing there.

May catalogue artist Isaac Smith, really shines with his unique style and impressive use of color and shape. His bio is a must read and you can also get a look at some of his other work on his profile page: http://www.xanadugallery.com/2013/Artists/ArtistPage.php…

Stained Glass and Oil Painting combination, an experiment part 2

The basic design was drawn out in ink and shown on the previous post.  I really enjoy the sound of ocean waves.  I wanted to capture the wave in motion and have fun with painting and glass together as I work in both mediums.  I like the idea of the glass flowing off of the canvas.

The first image is of the design drawn on the canvas and tracing paper around the canvas.
The second image shows the painting started and the shapes for the glass pieces cut out of the tracing paper and taped together.  I then took the tracing paper cutouts and drew them on a large sheet of butcher paper for the glass sections.
The image below shows the painting portions of the piece completed.
The glass pieces starting to be pieced together.
This has been a challenge lining up the glass sections to fit between the painted sections.  It is coming together.  After completing the glass section the next issue will be how to secure the glass piece onto the canvas.  I have a rough idea at this point.

"Take your child to work",day

Today, I have had the pleasure of my son joining me at work.  I showed him the process of designing a window for a client, how to figure out the square footage of a window, the business side of doing art, etc  We have been having fun!
He has learned that there is a lot to the process of creating the completed project.

Stained Glass and Oil Painting Combination- an Experiment

I am trying something different, something I have not seen before and thought I would give it a shot and see how it turns out.  I have been mulling over this for quite awhile and it is finally coming together in my mind.  The idea is of an ocean wave flowing off of a canvas.  Portions of the design would be oil painted and others would be glass flowing off the space.
This is the basic concept sketched out.

I have the glass all picked out and am excited about it.

Church windows completed!

This was an 8 window project for St Peters catholic church in Spokane, WA.  As noted earlier in previous posts about the process I noted that the design was by Joan Smith in Coer d Alene, ID which I also gave input into the design and I fabricated the windows.
They are beautiful in the space which is pretty high up in the entry way. The image depicts the Holy Spirit.  I enjoyed working with Joan and Andi from the church and am grateful for the opportunity to create these windows.

Enjoy!

The above image shows the panes reflected in glass.

This bottom one shows light scattering from the bevels and the colors/textures when the sun shines through.

Circular stained glass window completed !

Before and after installation.  Stained glass measures 46in diameter

I installed the circular window today and am very pleased with the results.  The above 2 images show before and after installation.  The next several images show the piece in different lighting and some closeups.  In the above image the reflection of the window is seen on the tub and tile work.  The client is very impressed and pleased with the window.  I incorporated hand beveled glass and different clear textured glass to give privacy and light play.  When the sun shines on it the colors and textures of the glass will dance all over the walls and glass shower.

Round Window- beveling process

The following images show the stages of beveling from cutting the shapes, getting the rough edge through polishing.

Drawing the shapes on the glass and cutting them out.

Upper pic shows the rough cut of the bevels, the lower shows the smoothing step compared to the rough cut.

The upper image shows the pre polish step compared to the smoothing step and the lower image shows the final polish step compared to the pre polish.

All pieces polished and ready to be added to the panel.
